Folder Utility Help Version 1.00

Use the F1 key to obtain dialog specific help from dialogs.

Summary

Folder Utility is useful for:

  1. Viewing a folder tree with size information.
  2. Updating a backup folder on a second drive.
  3. Comparing two folders with their sub-folders.
  4. Copying file names and information to documents.
  5. Renaming JPG, MP3 and general files within a folder.

Viewing a folder tree

Folder Utility can be used to view the size and number of files contained in a folder and it's sub-folders. It can show the following statistics for a folder and all of the sub-folders nested in that folder:

The currently displayed tree structure can be saved as a text file that Notepad can open. See Tree Options for a list of options in displaying the file tree.

Updating a backup folder

Folder Utility can be used to update a backup (Target) folder so that it contains the same folders and files as the main (Source) folder. Files with the same dates are assumed to be the same. The changes can be limited to a single folder or can include all sub-folders. See Keep a backup copy of a folder up to date for more details.

Comparing folders

Folder Utility can be used to compare the files and sub-folders of two folders. Files with the same dates are assumed to be the same. This can be used to view the changes since the last update operation between folders. See Compare Dialog for more details.

Copying file names and information to documents

The Show files command displays the files in the currently selected folder. Displaying extension, date and size is optional. Use the mouse to select the information to copy. Use Ctrl-C to copy the selected information and pasted it into a document. If a file is dragged into Folder Size and 'Show Files' is used, the file is highlighted and Ctrl-C can be used to copy the filename onto the clipboard. This option is useful if you are describing a file and don't want to retype the filename. See How to copy file information to documents for more information.

Renaming files

While the files in a folder are being displayed, you can rename the files. See Rename all the files in a folder for more details. You can rename using one of the following methods:

1 Add date to JPG (picture) files

Most cameras store the date a picture was taken as part of the JPG file. This option extracts that information from the file and adds it to the filename in the yyyy-mm-dd format. This allows windows to sort the pictures by the date the pictures were taken. Most pictures editors preserve this information so the files can be resorted by date even after being edited.See JPG Date Options for more details.

2 Modify filenames systematically

This method allows you to add the same text to the beginning and/or end of each filename, to replace one pattern in all filenames with another pattern, to remove a fixed number of characters from the beginning or end of all filenames and/or to remove characters from the beginning of the all filename through a pattern or from a pattern to the end of all filenames. See Rename: Modify Options for more details.

3 Add a number to MP3 filenames based on date/time

Most DVD and MP3 CD players play the songs in alphabetical order. If you've ripped all the songs from your CD in the same operation, the file creation date/time order matches the order of the songs on the CD. This option adds numbers 01, 02 ... to the beginning of the filenames so that alphabetical order is the same as the creation date. As a result of this, you can listen to songs from a musical CD in the correct order on most DVD and CD players that support MP3 files. See Rename Number by Date/Time options for more details.

4 Change filenames or extensions to Upper Case or Lower Case

UNIX web systems are case sensitive. It is simpler to use all lower case for file name references in HTML files and change all file names to lower case. This command allows you to do that. You specify if you want the name, extension or both changed and if you want to change them to lower case or upper case. See Rename Case Change Options for more details.
